Review by Kozo: Ekin Cheng makes his bid for Andy Lau-like status with this ambitious triad movie that's interesting but questionably staged.

This is a decent outing with an effective central performance by Ekin Cheng, but it's ultimately only slightly above average. Year: 2001 Ekin Cheng Director: Cast:, Wong Bun-Yuen, Tam Wai-Ho The Skinny: Competent and entertaining triad drama that never rises above its genre because of the routine handling from director Jingle Ma. The subtitles are a complete gramatical mess, but you'll understand them none the less. The disc is double sided, meaning you have to turn it over halfway through, which is slightly annoying. There are no extras on the disc besides a trailer for City of Desire (I'd eat my hat if they had managed more). The score sounds great coming from all speakers and there's a fair emount of rumbles from the sub, but for some reason the sound from the centre channel is often muffled and uneven. Obviously the Cantonese DTS track is the one to go for if you have the equipment. This is a record as far as I'm concerned. There are two Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, two DTS ES tracks, and two stereo tracks (Mandarin and Cantonese). The source of these problems is undoubtedly due to the insane number of language tracks on the disc. The colours look fine, but the image is ruined by jagged edges and blur problems, despite having a high bit-rate. The image is given in a 16 x 9 non-anamorphic transfer. The DVD unfortunately, is a different matter and is the reason behind me not giving it a perfect score.

God knows how many times I've sat through it, and God knows I'll still be watching it in 20 years from now. Fans of Ekin Cheng will be pleased to know that this is his best performance to date. I'm unsure of who composed it, but the man or woman behind this soundtrack definately deserves recognition.Īll in all, this is a movie that should be seen by anyone even remotely interested in the subject matter - it's a film you won't forget. The score is beautifully done and succeeds wonderfully in emphasizing the emotions and atmosphere. Jingle Ma's powerful direction in combination with the all-round flawless performances creates a realistic atmosphere and you can truly feel for the characters involved. On top of that, a young boy is left at his doorstep who claims to be his son. Unfortunately, this proves to be more difficult than Cool had anticipated, and he is constantly pleaded to join back up with his gang and ex-girlfriend (Karen Mok). The plot revolves around ex-triad, Cool Dragon (Ekin Cheng), who after spending time locked up in a Taiwanese prison, decides to change his ways and leave his life of crime behind him. Cool, but another Better Tomorrow is not what Jingle Ma was aiming for. That's not to say there's no action in Mr. If it's adrenaline pumping shootouts and car chases you're after, look elsewhere. First let me set the record straight - this is not an action movie. However, he takes a sharp turn this time around from his trademark playfulness and creates one of the most moving gangster films I've ever seen. Jingle Ma, camera-man turned director, is most famous for Tokyo Raiders, Para Para Sakura and numerous other action and Triad flicks. I soon found out that ignoring this title was a definate mistake.

Cool I wasn't expecting much, given the reasonable low publicity of the title and absence of any hype surrounding its release. 1 people found this review helpful Jingle Ma's moving triad drama is his best to date Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10īefore I saw Goodbye Mr.
